Gambling is certainly not something new to mankind. Probably since the time of cavemen, people have been gambling about practically everything under the sun. The history of online gambling, however, is much shorter. In fact, the term was only coined in the 1990's - a period that is a drop in the ocean of time when considering the whole picture.

However, the history of online gambling - albeit short - is exciting and explosive. In 1994, the Antigua Barbudan government announced that online casinos would be allowed to operate from the island. This new law (the Free Trade and Processing Zone Act) changed the face of online gambling for good. While the technology to operate online casinos existed at that time, there was still the problem of the legalities of the issue. The new island law solved this problem. Cryptologic was the first gambling company to recognize the vast potential in the law and started operations almost immediately. Several other companies quickly followed suit.

The online gambling industry took off at a fast and furious pace. Competition got tougher as technology improved. Only the truly good gambling sites are making a name for themselves today, as gamblers look for the best games and the most reliable sites that their money can buy. The future of online gambling has never looked more promising, despite hitches in many legal systems around the world.
